The long-awaited seventh novel in the popular Roger and Suzanne mystery series is the second novel starring prize-winning dog Juliet as a featured character. Suzanne, with a lot of help from Bruce, enters Juliet and her puppy Romeo in several local hunt tests. Naturally, Suzanne finds a dead body at the hunt test venue her first time handling Romeo. Roger, recruited at the scene by an old friend from the local Sheriff’s Department, is asked to help in the murder investigation. It looks like an impossible case to solve. Roger launches a complex, multifaceted investigation, picks up a couple of paying clients and a new detective for his agency, and gets to learn all about canine hunt tests. There’s plenty of suspense as we join the dogs and the detectives hunting their prey while also peeking into the Southern California social scene and lifestyle. A must for German shorthaired pointer and other hunting dog owners, breeders, and handlers, dog lovers in general, and mystery fans. All of the books in this series can be read as standalone entries or in series order.

I've enjoyed this series, especially the development of the characters and their dogs. In Hunter Down, Roger and Suzanne's hunting dog, Romeo, finds a dead body while participating in a test of his hunting abilities. Roger, a private detective, gets quickly pulled into the investigation. The dead man is a member of their dog hunting club and a real estate investor, but soon it is also revealed he was a minor mobster and money launderer. The pace is measured and much of the critical details are given to the reader in dialogue as the characters eat. In fact what and where they eat is a fun plot layer in and of itself, as they concoct a sting over French pastries, and finalize details in a German restaurant. Great twist at end when the murderer is caught. But the best part is when the dogs are featured and I can't wait to find out if Romeo passes his Master Hunter test.Product details

Hunter Down Roger and Suzanne mystery series Book 12 edition by Jerold Last Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
I have experience with GSPs, so I was interested in seeing how they could be worked into this story. The author, Last, had experience with them as well because what was written about them was accurate. The sleuths' dog finds a murder victim in a ditch. Who was the victim? Who killed him and why? Although Roger is a private detective, most of his cases just he just seems to stumble upon. Suzanne and Roger, the married detective couple ala Mr. and Mrs North have their work cut out for them to find out the who and why.
Jerold Last can certainly spin a ‘good yarn’ and this one like all the others I have read is no exception. The Roger and Suzanne stories are well written and the characters well drawn. I think that a lot of research must have gone into this story, which goes into the world of dog training and their owners.
The family puppy Romeo is in his inaugural hunt test when he discovers the body and the storyline reveals a fairly complicated plot that twists and turns until the last page.
The background information is interesting, and as always this is a book that you ‘feel at home with.’
Great job by the author and I’m looking forward to reading some more of his work.
When Suzanne takes her new puppy, Romeo, out for his first official hunt test, his sensitive nose guides her straight to a dead body. Of course! Suzanne has a talent for finding bodies, so husband, Roger, and his team become involved in the complicated murder investigation. Suzanne and Bruce work to put hunting titles on their canines and keep their senses attuned to finding clues.
As a former participant in conformation and obedience dog shows, I enjoyed learning how hunt tests worked in between unraveling the sleazy background of the murder victim. The methodical detective work is well-told and many valid suspects are uncovered. I'm pleased that Roger manages to work in harmony with the police force, actually providing valuable support rather than conflict that so many detective programs on television foster. The victim was a real piece of work, a womanizer, a money launderer for the mob, and the worst kind of crooked real estate investor. Who wouldn't want to knock the guy off? Of course, it is necessary for Roger to find the real culprit and earn his large fee.
If you enjoy a police procedural, a complicated mystery, clever investigating that all takes place in an unusual setting, this book hits high on all marks. Although it is part of a series, there is enough information provided for a new reader to enjoy the story as a standalone book. I was provided a review copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. I honestly enjoyed the book and recommend it highly.
My GSP has his JH and Mr Last does a great job of describing Hunt Tests and providing a good mystery as well.
Great story with a great plot. Kept me reading almost non-stop. I highly recommend.
Another Jerold Last story...always enjoyable.
The Roger and Suzanne mysteries are always good and have particularly liked the two that have a plot centering around the 'dog world'. The first was show dogs, which was familiar to me and this book goes on with AKC field trials, something that has been developed since I was involved personally with show dogs. Again, very accurate portrayal of dogs, their training and their personalities plus a very realistic look at dog show people as well. Personal dog show experience makes the author add realism to the storyline without error and as always, good, solid mystery plot and returning series characters.
